In April 2005 ten Nova High School students, along with their teacher, Joe Szwaja and his wife Debra Morrison, traveled to East Timor to visit the capital city of Dili and their sister school in Manatuto. The students saw first hand the poverty of the people and the destruction of of much of the country's infrastructure. They experienced the reality of life in a country with a severely limited health care system while attending two funerals during the course of their trip; both deaths due to Dengue fever. They also experienced tremendous generosity and kindness. They saw people happy to be free of the oppression of foreign occupation and working to rebuild their lives and their country. It was a trip of a lifetime and had a profound effect on every member of the group.  U.S. students entertaining Timor students
